NRA Certified Rifle & Shotgun Instructor and Range Safety Officer (RSO) Course is being offered on Saturday and Sunday, November 14 & 15, 2020 and December 12 & 13, 2020.  This is a new NRA required 4-day format for those who wish to support shooting sports activities at the Unit, District and Council level.  Completion of the course also allows Merit Badge Counselors to teach the Rifle and Shotgun Merit Badges.  See the Registration Requirements below.  Youth attendees under the age of 21 cannot obtain the RSO certification.  The New Requirement – The new requirement levied by the NRA requires all Rifle and Shotgun instructor candidates to successfully complete the Basic Rifle and Basic Shotgun Shooting Courses before taking the NRA Rifle and Shotgun Instructor Courses.  Each of the two Basic Courses is 1-day in duration and will be presented on November 14 & 15.  The NRA Rifle and Shotgun Instructor Courses and the RSO Course will be presented on December 12 & 13. Attendance and completion of all courses is required.  NRA Instructor and RSO Certifications will be awarded.


NRA Certified Range Safety Officer Course.  Current NRA Instructors that wish to add the BSA required RSO certification to their credentials can attend only the RSO portion of the course on December 13th.  This course is only available to Registered Adult Scout leaders, 21 or older.  Registration Requirements below apply.  Youth under the age of 21 cannot obtain this certification.

NRA Certified Pistol Instructor Course may be offered in early 2021, depending on the level of interest and by student availability. This is a 1-day course for those who wish to add pistol shooting to their NRA instructor credentials and support Venture pistol shooting activities at the Crew, District and Council level.  This is a two-part Instructor Training Course with the part I, Basic Pistol Shooting, taken online in advance in advance of part 2, which will be conducted at Spanish Trail Scout Reservation.  However, completion of the NRA Rifle & Shotgun Instructor course is required.  Further information will be provided during the Dec 2020 Instructor course or upon request.


REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS:  Adult attendees must be registered Scout Leaders or Merit Badge Counselors, 21 or older.  BSA registered youth attendees age 14 and above may register for the Rifle, Shotgun courses and become Apprentice or Assistant Instructors.  They may also sit in on the RSO course to learn the duties and responsibilities of a RSO.  NRA membership is not required.  Experience with course appropriate firearms is recommended.  All courses will be presented in Henson Hall at the Spanish Trail Scout Reservation in DeFuniak Springs, FL.


FURTHER INFORMATION.  Upon completion of the above courses and in accordance with Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Publication “Guide to Safe Scouting”, number 34416A, NRA Instructors and RSOs will be able to teach and supervise Boy Scout and Venture rifle, shotgun, and Venture pistol shooting.  Instructors may also register as Rifle Shooting and Shotgun Shooting Merit Badge Counselors in accordance with BSA Merit Badge books number 35942 & 35948.  Additionally, NRA instructors can present NRA Basic Rifle, Shotgun and Pistol courses.  They may also serve as NRA RSOs on any Boy Scout range or any private or public ranges that require their use.
